An Air India Boeing 787-8 flight from Ahmedabad to London crashed shortly after takeoff on the afternoon of June 12, 2025, killing 241 of the 242 people on board. The aircraft took off at 1:38 p.m. and plummeted within minutes into the hostel mess building of B.J. Medical College, located about 5 km from the airport. Over 100 students were present during lunchtime when the crash triggered a massive explosion and a towering plume of smoke. Only one survivor has been reported.
Among the victims was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. The pilots had issued a ‘Mayday’ call shortly after takeoff, indicating a life-threatening emergency, but did not respond to further communication from air traffic control.
On Friday, investigators recovered the aircraft’s black box from the rooftop of the hostel mess building. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) confirmed the recovery and stated that analysis of the device could provide vital clues to what caused the crash. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site and met the injured survivor at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the disaster.
